COAL FOR THE DIRECT STEAMERS. Christchurch, August 22.
I find that in the return laid on the table of the House the amount of coal supplied to the direct steamers was very much under stated — in fact, it is too small by half. Messrs Kinsey and Co. regularly supply the New Zealand Shipping Company with 27,000 tons per annum, the value at 25s per ton being £33,500 ; Shaw, Savill, and Co. take an equal quantity. Therefore the worth of the native coal consumed by the direct liners is £67,000 per annum instead of £32,000. The figures are of interest both from their bearing on the question of mail services, and also from the present rise in the price owing to the complications in Australia.
Sir Morell Mackenzie hae published in the English papers a reply to bhe attack made upon him by the German press in connection with his attendance on the late Emperor.
