CANADA AND THE UNITED STATES. THE FISHERIES TREATY REJECTED. WASHINGTON, August 25.
The Fisheries Treaty between Canada and the United States was rejected in the Senate by a majority of three. The discussion of the measure proceeded on party lines ; twenty-seven democrats voted in favour of tho treaty and thirty Republican Senators against it. Great excitement prevailed in the Senate when the result of the division was announced. Senator Morgan, in the course of his speech, delivered immediately after the result was known, said that if England had acted in a similar way towards the United States, the latter power would have taken it as a direct challenge of war. It is expected that further trouble will arise between Canada and the United States in consequence of the rejection of tho treaty. A section of the Press is adopting a >Yarlike tone, but there is very little excitement throughout this country or in Canada at result. It is believed that the modus virendi between the two countries will be maintained.
