OHINEMURI. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Paeroa, Tuesday.

On Saturday last the agent for Mr J. C. Firth's s.s. Koluku here received a wire from that gentleman, generously offering to convey any ore from this district for the Melbourne Exhibition free of charge to Auckland. Mr Firth's action will be doubly appreciated when it is known that Government has agreed to pay for the transit of the ore from the mine to Auckland. Asa rule, when the country pays for anything, it is a general principle to pile on the expenses instead of lessening them. In o mnection with this, Mr W. G. Nicholls, County Chairman, has received the following letter from the Inspector of Mines :—: — Sir, — I have been iststructed by the Mines Department to ansist local committee in collecting exhibits of quaitz for Melbourne Exhibition tion, and to pay cost of transit from the mines to Auckland. Will you therefore be good enougli to inform the Ohinemuri Exhibition Commute, and others who may be desirous to forward exhibits, to use good baga, each bag to hold one ovt. only; the bags to be labelled with the naino of the mine. For very rich oro boxes may be used. If you would collect the exhibits at Paeroa, and keeo them in your charge, I will take delivery of them at an eaily date, and pay all carrUae from the mines. As it is highly dosiiable that as good a display as possible should be sent from Ohinemuri, will you please lender assistance in obtaining good sample-* of ore fiom the vanous uunot- in jour district. — I have, &c, Gr<o Wilson, In r ~tioctoi oi Miiu-B. W. G. Niuhulls. Chaiiman Ohinemuri County Council, Paeroa. P.S. — A short desenption of the mine from which such exhibit is obtained might also be prepared. On Saturday last a well-known native named Nikoroma, while at Tutuki's i tangi at Te Aroha, receive] a wire fiom Hikutaia, telling him to inform another native, known as Matthew Te Puna, that his (Matthew's), so-n-m-iaw had been found dead in the Hikutaia bush, ;ui,l ' that it wns supposed he bad been murdered. No.tbing more has been he ml of the matter up to (he time of \uiting, although a unlive infmmed mo that the body hud been found and taken to tho Thames. Constable Mitchell has been making enquiries, but can elucidate nothing. Although the afftiir may bo a hoax, yet it bears the stamp of truth. Mr Cadn^an wired the County Chairman on Saturday last us follows : — Co Estimates, Ohinemuri Count) V'>te"y\ithout subsidy , Ohinomuii Valley to Waitekauri, .£5O ; Hikutaia to Mar,>toto, £1250 ; Whang, amata Harbour to reefs, .£5OO. A £250 subsidy £ for £ granted for Waihi Bridge. Mining matters arc much ns usual. At Karangahake Mr ITaslctt is making rapid progress with the Parkcs Furnace and but for one or two little matters this would have now been ready. During this and next month uo less than 206 tons coal and flux will be taken alone. I am afraid that unless a lot more work is done on the road there will be much annoying 1 and expensive delay. At Waihi the furnace has been started on a preliminary trial. Tho boiler has also been tested. Everything is gouig on satisfactorily. Mr P. Howell, late steward at Mr Walker's, has taken over the Waihi Hotel. During the Heitman and party had an interim clean up of IS tons from the Woodstock, for s&oza bullion, worth upwards of 20s per oz. This did not include the boxes, etc., but only a rough cleaning of the plates.
