THE DROWNING AT KAIPARA.

Auckland, August 18. The following particulars are to hand re. garding the drowning case at (Shelly Beach, Kaipara Harbour. The storekeeper, James btewart, reported to the police that at 2.30 o'clock on Thursday a Maori named Harry Davis came to his place and stated that ne had seen a boat capsize in the sea, about a mile and a-half down towards Kaipara Heads. The native in company with a man named Scarborough went out in a boat in order to try and save the man who was in distress. When they got to the boat she was lying on her side, and full of water. A man was clinging to the rigging with the sea wash-, ing over him. It was very rough at the time- They took the man into the boat, and pulled him ashore. He was very exhausted, and quite insensible. They lit a fire and rubbed the man, but were unable to restore him to consciousness He died without speaking. The boat was al6 footer half decked. The deceased belonged to Port Albert and was named George Pratt. He was in the habit of bringing provisions along the coast. Constable Foreman brought the body down to Hobsonville, where the district coroner, Mr Albert Beetham, will hold the customary enquiry.

Port Albert, August 18, Intelligence has been wired to Port Albert from Helensville .that on Thursday a young named Harry Y. Prout was found clinging to the rigging of a boat near Shelly Beachj and died soon after* being landed there. He sailed from Port Albert on Wednesday, intending to leaving his cutter at the Headsin charge of his mate, while he went on in a smaller boat to Helensville, and. it is supposed he was caught in the gale on Thursday night and capsized. He had lived three or tour years at Port Albert,and was much esteemed for his good conduct. <i
