A LIBEL SLIT. Invercargill, August 20.
In the Supreme Court on Saturday W. H. Painter, lately of the R.M. Court and Liconsing Bench at Gore, sought to recover £2,soodamagcs foy libel againstJ. G. Fraser, editor of the "Southern Standard." The libel consisted in certain comments in connection with a scene in the Gore Court-house between the Mayor and two other justices, and the fact that a report trom the police objecting to the gi anting of a license was not produced at the proper time. For tho defence it was held that the comments were fair and honest and made in the public interest. The jury returned a vordict for defendant, with costs.
The sheep purchased in the North Island in execution of frozen mutton orders sent to Chr^tchvuch, but not carried out on acpount of the high rates ruling at pvesontu amount to 180,000 carcaaos.
