VILLAGE SETTLEMENTS. The Cabinet has been unable, in consequence of the native obstruo tion, to find time to consider the village settlement proposals from Auckland. The matter is, howe\er, not bein^ losb sight of. The Pioinicr i- understood to be favomablc. The JNJini^tcr of Lands has heard bo many conflicting accounts ot the settlements that lie pioposos to £0 Noith with Mr Mi'chcl^on immediately the bCP^iou is over and visit them. The Premier will al*o go later on when the summer weather sots m. It is probable that mcmbeis will bo m Auckland some time during the lecoa

OUR MINING EXHIBITS AT -MELBOURNE. Another meeting of the (loldheldi Committee was held to - da\ relative to the N.Z. mining exhibit 1 -. The haming of a report on bhi> question was deferred until We.lna-.da;), but it was arranged that the Chairman of the Committee should inotHcially communiiare with the authoiioics in the diiluont mining centres of the colony with the mow of ascertaining whether liu-oc "samples of ore can be obtained and to Melbourne. in order to and to the atu actions ot the mining; exhibits?.
THE EDMONDS CLAIM. Mr Thompson -was hnally informed to-day that the Government aie not able to do anything in theclai.n on account 01 the late S. J. Edmonds. Tlic ca.-*e ha^ been tuli_\ gone into, and it does not appear that the vessel was chaitored either by or for bheCiovernment.
CORPORATION LEASEHuL DS. I understand that next, Thin relay's " Gazette " will contain an official nofcihoation blinking 1 the ooiouyh or Auckland under the operation ot the Local Bodies' Povveis and Finance Act. This will^ive the City Council pow ci to grant icliei to their tenants by reducing the iout» ot Corporation leaseholds when desirable.
MR GOLDIE AND HIS PRINCIPLES. Mr Goklio was asked to propose die to;u-b j of " The Press" at the protectionist banquet the other evening:, but lof used to do jo, on the ground that his principles would not permit him to ask anyone present to charge his glass with intoxicating liquor.
AUCKLAND HARBOUR IMPROVEMENT BILL. The amendments made by the Legislative Council in this Bill were a^ieed to in the Lower Hou&e j'esterdaj", on the motion of jNIr Peacock, who said the cftuct ot the alterations was simply to lea\e out the name of the Roman Catholic Bishop and to make the Bill an enabling one for the exchange of land. Tlii? Bill and the Kjrai-mtwahia Ccmeteiy Recedes Bill now only await the absent 01 the (Governor to make them law.
TE AROHA RAILWAY DRAINS. Dissatisfaction has been e\ preyed tor some time past by settlers on the banks ot the Thames River at Hikutaia on account of the filling up of outfall drain* from the Tharues-Te Aioha railu ay, causing inundations of the neigh bom in<_r fauns and the local school giounds. Thi* feeling has found expression in a petition to the Minister for Public Works, signed by Me>sr>> Alley, McFlinn, and others, asking that provision may be made in the ne\t con ti act for the deepening of the ditches, which were originally fi\e feet in depth, but have now shallowed in place-, to two feet. jSIr Cadman has fovwai ded the petition to the Government, and urged that attention be given to the grievance.
CARLTOX HOTEL LICENSE. The last "Gazette''conbain> a notice of the cancellation ot the club licence held by the Cavlton Hotel, Newmarket. The reasons foi this action are also given.
THE COSTLEY HOME. I belie\e it is the intention of Mr Golclie to ask the Minister of Education on Wednesday next whether the trustees, oi the Costley Training Institution aie maintaining out of the funds at their disposal the full nurabei 1 of children that then income would warrant. If not, will the Government ascertain the leason, and if it should be because theie is not a su'lieiency of children at> Kohimarama ht to be apprenticed, will the Government take steps to have an alteration made in the Costley Training Institution Act by which younger children might be taken inco theinstitution and maintained until old enough to be apprenticed, and thus save the ratepayer from burdens which the Costley bcejugjat if utilised to its fullest extent would relieve ?
AUCKLAND MIKING EXHIBITS. One intention of the Government with regard to the representation of Auckland at the Exhibition ]& co send one ton of ordinary quartz from each of the principal Northern mining centres of New Zealand — the Thames, Coromandel, Waihi, Karantrahake, and Marototo — paying all the eo&b oi freight from the mine. The idea is lhac the stuff shall be a fair sample, and thai any mining experts visiting the Exhibition shall have full liberty to take small quanli ties from the parcel for testing purpose-^. The absurd proposal that any exhibitor sending valuable specimens ohall be required to guarautee payment of duty should they not be retained is, to be abandoned.
SMALL PASTORAL RUNS. Some doubt is entertained a.s to whether the amendment made by the Legislative Council in the Laud Act Amendment Bill directing small pastoral runs to be dealt with in accoi dance with Part 6 of the original Act is mandatory or optional. Canterbury members are desirous that the latter should be law, and at a meeting held yesterday morning Messrs Rhodes, McGregor and Perceval were appointed a committee to wait upon the Minister of Lands to ascortain the position. It seems that the Solici-tor-General considers the ruling of the section makes it mandatory, but the (<overnraent are willing that it should be optional, and will amend bhe Act accordingly if the other law officer of the Crown considers it necessary.
