The Population of Paris.
Tini Statistical Bureau of the municipality ot Paris lias just issued the returns as to the population ot the city and of the Do pmtment of the Seine at the end ot 1886 1 These returns put the total population o the department at 2,961,089, of whom 2,3 / 14,450 were xcsident in Paris itself. At the beginning of the century the total population of the Koine was only 631,585, &o that it is now uioro than four times larger I han it then was, increasing to 1.200,000 in 1840 and to 2,400,000 in 1876. It has, therefoie, increased by about 600,000 in the la&t !cn years.
The waiter's ready explanation : ' How can you give such a dirty napkin as this ?'• ' Beg pardon, &ir ; got folded the wrong way, fair. There, sir ; how's that, now ?'
