A LETTER FROM MELBOURNE. The leportcd meagie diVplay of the mineral wealth of New Zealand at the Melbourne Exhibition has been confimicd by a letter reeched recently by His Woiship the Mayor of Auckland, from a piominent citi/.on of Melbourne. [t is dated the 31&t of July, and the writer .states: — " I have been privileged to vis-it the Now Zealand Couit three times, and am disappointed at the display, or, to be more accurate, the want ot' display, of minoialf and mincial stone fiom your colony, and especially so at the poor displays fiom your latetot disscovoiy, the To Aioha, mines, and the Thames. Thcic ib time yet to remedy this, foramonthwillclap&oboforo the Exhibition will be in its. permanentfoim, and if you as Mayor cannot obtain mineral stone from the Auckland district, yon may induce those who have tho powci and the will to select and forward specimens. 13y specimens I mean considerable quantities from each mine- exhibiting say, a ton ot least, arc!, if an opportunity is oflorcd of crushing it, tho stone should bo offered lor that purpose. Melbourne people will not belicvo in the cxistencoof payable stone unless they can see samples of it, and sec it crushed if thoy feel inclined." Mr Dovorc wrote to the Chairman of tho Chamber of Commerce (Mr John Buchanan) and to tho Chairman of tho Brokers' Association (Mr Joseph Newman • sec if the ovil could bo 1 remedied. His Worship drew attention to the fact that New Zealand's mineral wealth was reported Lo be inadequately represented at the Exhibition, and .slated thab in order to remedy the defect he had written to Mr 11. 11. Adams, of Waiorongomai, asking him to use his influence at To Aioha in order Lo make a good selection of mineral ore lor the Exhibition, lie had also suggested to Mr Adams the advisability of calling a public meeting at To Aiolm in oidcr to ventilate tho matter. Mr Young, Secretary ot the Chamber of Commerce, replied: "Sir. -I have tho honour by dircetion to acknowledge receipt of yoms ot the Bth instant, re exhibits for Melbourne Exhibition. Tho Council of the Chamber have instructed me to write to tho several mino managcis uiging upon them the desirability of their sending quartz specimens from each of the mines with full description thereof, to the Exhibition at Melbourne without delay. — I have, &c, J. Youmi, Sccrelaxy. Mr Newman wrote as follows : — " ( Sir, — I have laid your letter before ti.e members of the Brokers' Association re samples of lnineial* for the Melbourne-Ex-hibition. Some of them, connected with the Thames and Te Aroha mines, have momiscd to do what they can to promote the object in view. — I am, etc., Joskimi Nkwman." Mr J. Young, Bccrctaiy to tho Chamber ol Cummerce, also has sent the following letter to tho mine managcis, Messis F. A. While, D. d MacDonnoll, and li. MeDoimld Scolt:— " August 9, 1888, Sir, — I am dcnhcd by the Council of the Chamber of Commerce to solicit your aid in proem ing from the mines under your charge specimens of quartz, etc. , m ith a lull desci iption of your mincsaud their woiking, with a view to sending same to the Melbourne Inhibition. All exhibits will bo scut fiom heio fice of expense, and tlic (iovoi'timciiL liavo allowed bho &<iiiie to be expoitcd free of duty, oxpoitei& giving a guarantee to rc-impoit or pay duty.
