PUNT AT MURPHY'S LANDING.

At the Piako County County Council meeting on Friday last the following correspondence was read respecting this matter, (Ifc will be remembered a couple of months back Cr Murphy informed thn Council his son, Mr C. Murphy, desired to give notice that he should cease running the punt at the end of a month. Ifc was resolved by Council to invite tenders for the leasing of the right to run a similar punt, Council to subsidise the lessee to the extent of '2s per day, as heietofoi'o ; ami al,a 1 , the Council meeting held on July 13th, the tender of Messrs Lloyd and Irwin was accepted, they to take up the running on August Ist). The Clerk seated he wrote Messrs Lloyd and Irwin informing them their" tender had been accepted, ami forwarding deed of agreement for them to sign and return. To this Messrs John Lloyd and Irwin, replied as follows, dated Waiorougomai, July 27 :—": — " Memorandum of Bgreernent returned herewith unsigned, there being no clause inserted in same re L 36 subsidy per annum. Kindly insert and return." The Clerk stated that on receipt of this letter he saw that through an oversight the clause referred to by them had been omitted, and he at once had the matter" rectified and a fresh agreement with the subsidy clause duly inserted and forwarded for signature. Instead of signing the deed however, Messrs Lloyd and Irwin wrote as follows, dated Waiorongomai, August 9th :—": — " Finding that there gwas nothing mentioned about 2s per day in agreement received by us for signature, we could not therefore make arrangements about purchasing punt, hence the reason why a punt was not placed on the river on the Ist insfc as required by tender. Mr- Marphy has kindly kept his son running punt up to date. We now beg that the Council will agree that in the event of Council taking over punt t\i any time the Council will allow us cost price of punt Ick° ton per cent, instead of valuation. We b»g to inform Council that Mr Murphy wants £75 for his punt. V. T e also lequest that n clause may be inserted in agreement authorising us to give v,> punt at any time after one year fioin date of agreement by giving six month:? notice of our intention so fo do, ami that in such case the Council will agree to pay the same price for punt as they wouM do if the agreement whs terminated by the act of Council. Wr also beg that a <*]nu«e bo iii^erto.l that in the event of a bridge being built we In allowed the same co'isuloiation »« if the agreement was terminated by the act o r the Council " A letter was also ro<»d from Ci Mnrpliy dated Waiornii^oniai, July 28th, stating that having neon, informed by Messrs Lloy 1 and Irwin that they wore not goin^ to work the punt en the river at present, he had arranged to have the punt worked as usu.il until next meeting of Council. The Clerk stated that a tender cninc lo hand too late to be consideied at last Council meeting, from William FiHdor, of Waiorongomai, dated July Ilia, offering to work the punt on the same terms as it had been worked hitherto, A new tender was also read from James Stewart, dated Waioroncfomai, July 30th, as follows :—": — " lam informed that Messrs Lloyd and Irwlr. decline to take up the contract for working the punfc at Waiorongomai. I fchoivfore beg to tender for working the punt on said river Recording to the schedule of charges issued by the Council aii-i a subsidy of two shillings per day, the subsidy to continue onhj until such tia>e ; as the traffic increases so as that tin i punt will pay small wages. I ask noth- '< ing towards the cost of punt at the termination of the contract. The contract to terminate on the Council giving me one week's notice in wilting- to that effect. If my tender should be accepted I am prepared to stftrfc at once, as I have made arrangement^ for the jmnfc that h. now on the rivet. Please address your letter care of Mr D, Murphy for me." I Cr Murphy &^id Stewart was a very J decent young Fellow who had been employed by the late lessee ( Mr C. Murphy ■ in working the punt for him for the pa r -f six months. Cr Murphy pointed out te Council the advantage they would gain by accepting Stewarts tender, as he did not ask anything 1 towards the cost of the punt at the termination of the contract and for a subsidy only until he couhl make small wages out of it. He (Cr Murphy) had made arrangements with Stewart, but wished it understood that ho (Stewart) was only tendering on theunderstanding that Messrs Lloyd and Irwin had declined to take up the con tract, and not with any desire to do them out of it. Cr Murphy remarked that he had intended shifting the punfc a little further down and keeping it for his own private use. He also said bein,g an interested person he wished it understood he should not vote on any resolution respecting this matter. After some further discussion ifc was resolved, " That Council decline to grant the amended terms asked for by Messrs Lloyd and Irwin, in their letter of 9th insfc.," and as they had not taken up the running of the punfc on August Ist as agreed, it was resolved that the tender oC James Stewart be accepted.
