PIAKO COUNTY COUNCIL.
The ordinary monthly meeting of above Council was held at Morrinsville yesterday. Present : Cis Chepmell (chair), Gonld, Williams, Browning, Brunskill, and Murphy. Minutes of the previous monthly meetingwerc read and confirmed. Special Order. — The special order was confirmed, cor s tiki ting a portion oF the Cambridge-Oxford road (within Taotoaroa Road District), :\ district road. Resignation : From Cr F. Dibble, tendering his resignation as member for MataMata Riding, being- about to leave the district. Resolved that Cr DibWcs resignation be accepted with regret Punt at Murphy's Landing: Messrs Lloyd and Irwiu whose tender had been accepted at last meeting, wrote asking certain alterations to be made in terms of agreement. An offer was read from James Stewart of Waiorongomai for running the punt, and it was resolved that the alterations Messrs Lloyd and Irwin require bo not made, and as they had not started running the punt on August Ist as agreed, that the tender of Mr James Stewart be now accepted. Road to Okoroire Spi ings : Several letters were rend from Mr Isaacs (who desires a road to be made to these springs) Mr T. G. . Sande3 etc., re this matter, suggesting that a different line of road Irom that fiist proposed be selected,
which could bo taken under the five per cent claims in the Act for road purposes. Resolved that on Mr Isaacs depositing the sum of £15, estimated cost o'fj survey, etc., application bo made by Council to tho Governor for a warrant authorising tho taking of the road from tho Liehfield-Te Aroha road to the Okoioiro springs as suggested. It was stated that by adopting tho new lino of road proposed the necessity oF constructing a bridge over the river would be done away with. "Lionel Repairs : Erom D. McL. Wallace complaining of the very bad state of the main load, Kilgour stieet, leading up to the Battery, Wniorongomai. In reply to Council the Engineer stated he thought the expenditure of £5 or £6 would meet present requirements with respect to this application. Fiom J. H. Emett, asking that repairs be effected on the lower Hill track, stating that although he was only a working man himself he had done a great deal already to keep the road passable etc. In reply toConncil thoEngineer stated Emett had made a road into the bush at a cost of about L3O, and only asked from Council a refund of the L 4 4s he had paid himself in wages for recent repairs on the lower track, Emett was a firewood and bush contractor. The Engineer stated tho Waiorongo-mai-Te Aroha road was cutting up very badly, some of the small bridges were in a decayed state and the road urgently needed repairs to be carried out. In reply to Council the Engineer stated he thought L2O to LBO would be sufficient to put the road in a good state of repoir. Cr Gould said he considered the repaiiing of tho Te Aioha- Waiorongomai main road was a work that urgently requited to be carried out, and he would support its being done. Cr. Williams aaid he was satisfied from what Cr Gould had stated the work was necessary nnd the Council generally appeared favourable to having the road repaired. Cr Murphy said there would shortly be a great deaJ of very heavy carting over this road and spoke strongly in support of the work bi'ing done. It was ultimately recolved that the Engineer be authorised to expend the sum of L3O in' repaiiijag the To ArohaWaiorongomai road to include repairs to the road in Waiorongomai township leading up to tbc Battery referred to in Mr Wallace's application. With regard to EmnieU's application the Council objected to the establishing a precedent in the way of paying for work persons had first cauied out on their own responsibility, but as Emett had stated in his letter his intention of doidg future necessary repairs to the load himself, and in order to assist him it was resolved that the sum of L 4 4s be voted for keeping the mid referred to in repair during the ensuing six months. Goldfield Boundary : — The Engineer reported tint several of claims ha. l been recently taken at the northern enM of the County on the boulers of the Piako and Ohinemuri Counties, am! suggested that it would bo ad visible that the County boundary be cleaily defined. In re) ly to Council the Engineer offered to do the necessary work and prepare a map clearly showing the County boundary for the sum of JLS, Resohod that the Engineer be authorised to do the work for the sum stated. Apportionment of Revenue : The chairman said he thought it was time Cotincil took steps to comply with the provisions of tho Counties Art by proparing a statement re the financial position of tho several Ridings of the County, and allocation of revenue, etc, Resolved that the Chairman, Crs. Gould and Browning by appointed a committee to prepare the necessary statement and report at next meeting. Cemetery for Morrinsville : The Chairman said Mi Harrison, Manager of the Lockerbie Estate, had spoken to hfm of the desirability of having a cemetery at Morrinsville, and suggested that someone be appointed from Council to go with him and inspect a piece of land, which, if approved of, he would endeavour to have .granted for the purpose by the present; owners. Resolved that the chairman be authorised to act on behalf of Council and interview Mi* Harrisou on the matter.
Traction Engines : Resolved, That the Chairman be empowered to confer with the Chairman of the Counties of Waipa and Waikato as to th.i advisability of framing bye-laws for the traffic of these engines. Upper Hill Track, Waiorongomai : The Engineer reported that Shine, the contractor for repairing the Upper Hill Track, had nofc completed his contract, although the time specified expired in June. He had to complain also of the manner in which the work was being done. The specifications stated blue metal was to be used, but the stuff put on was not metal, and had already worked into mm!. Ho had been to see the contractor several times about the contract, but could get no satisfaction from him. Resolved that the Engineer be instructed to put on men to the work, cost of same to bo charged against the contractor.
Day of Meeting: Resolved that the^ day of meeting in future le Thursdays at eleven a.m.; that tho next meeting be held on 13th September, subsequent meetings every fourth Thursday afterwards. Accounts ; A number of accounts, amounting in, nil to L 205 3s 6d, were pß seed for payment.
