SUICIDE AT TANGARAHINE. A STRANGE CASE. Auckland, August 9.

News was received in town to-day that a man named John Murphy committed suicide last Monday by drowning himself at a place called Tangarahinc, which is about 12 miles beyond Dargaville. Murphy was an old bush cook well known in the Wairoa, having acted in that capacity at various mills and stations. Latterly he had been employed by Mr Walter Dyer, a bush contractor. At breakfast he remarked to the bushmen that he thought he was going mad, but they did not take much notice of the statement. When the men returned to dinner they discovered that no meal had been prepared. A little search showed Murphy's effects had been divided amongst the men's bunks. This rendered them suspicious, and a thorough search was instituted, which resulted in the discovery of Murphy's body. It wad found in the river with a line fastened from the boat and around deceased's neck. The men state that Murphy was in Dargaville drinking heavily last week. Constable McLeod was informed of the occurrence, and ho went up for the purpose of making inquiries and arranging for an inquest to be held

Lake Ladoga, in Russia, is the, largest fresh-water lake in Europe ; it covers an area of nearly 7,ooosquare miles.
