TOWN BOARD.

The ordinary meeting of the To Arolm Town Board was held on Thursday evening last. Present : — Coins. Dobson (in tho chair), Ilofcfc, and Frajser The minutes of tho lasfc ordinary meetijtig were read and confirmed, also thoso of two special meetings held subsequently.

The engineer of the Board was present j and stated thai the repairs to the main road authorised by the Brian I had been carried out, also the repairs to the bridge on the road to the Thames. Petition.— A petition was read requesting the* Board to imrrove the existing road leading past the properties of the petitioners, viz., Messrs Tho?. Bradley, Chas, E. Baleko, W. G. Devoy, John Wallace, Ed. M. Mercer, VV. Beresford, and Mrs Hotchin. Com. Uott thought the construction of n footpath would be all tho woik the Board could unJerfcaUe to do with the very limited funds at their disposal just now. Cotn.Frazci' said a crossing had already been formed. The Chairman thought the matter should be left to the Works Committee and moved, That the Engineer and Works Committee inspect the road andreport as to estimated cost of repairs at next meeting. This was seconded by Com. Ilott and' carried. _ Main Road. — Com 1 , Ilott drew attention to the- necessity of maintaining the main road in a thorough state of repair,. especially seeing that there would pro*--bably be ere long a great deal of heavycartage over it of material required in connection with projected mining works. The Chairman undertook t) giv© instructions to the engineer on the subject. Land Tenure. — Com. Ilott asked if the Board rould not take some steps in the direction of ascertaining what could: be done towards having the expressed wishes of a number of residents with regard to the tenure of the township allotments being placed on a more satisfactory basis, and thought it would be advisable to have a committee appointed to wait upon Mr Lipsey (from whom the township is leased under, arrangements with Government), amf ascertain what measures he would be agreeable"to, and to make any further inquiries deemed desirable. The Chainruun expiessed approval of the suggestion, and considered it wasthe duty of the Board to take action inthe mafctor, but reminded the members, that a committee had been appointed by a public meeting convened ru this subject, a year or two' ago, and it would benecessary to first ascertain what they had done. Com. Fiaser expressed lauuself as being aliongly opposed to the Board taking any action in this matter, as reconsidered rt was 7>ot a matter for theBo.iiil to di^cirss or take action in. Bale Collector. — Con* llott, remarked that it v>as necessary under Section 31 of the Town District Act, that the rate* collector give approved sectwity to theBoard. Resolvel on tho motion of Com*. Frazer that the clerk provide securely,, to be approved of by the chairman, to the .amount of £150. Clerk and Treasurer. — Resolved on 'the motion of the Chairman, seconded by Com. Froaer y That tho action of thecommittee appointed to arrange for theservice3 of a- clerk, etc., vice Mr D. J. Ffazer, resigned, and the appomtmenfe by them of Mr J. McL. Murray, as. clerk and collector to the Board be con>fiimed. Resolved on the motion- of Coin Frazer seconded by the chairman that Mr J. McL. Murray be appointed treasurer to the Board, vice- Mr JJYuzer,. resigned. Water Supply. — Tho Chairman thought that some stops should betaken at an eaFly date to provide a water supply for the townsMp, and stated that as a result of enquiries made through Mr J. B. Whyte, member for Waikato, tho money could be obtained for the work at a low rate of interest. Ho thought the work could be carried out for about £1000. Com. Ilott said that although, a watersupply would be a great advantage, yet he thought the township was too young' to bear the additional taxation. Com. Frazer said in his opinion the first thing to be done was to ascertain beyond doubt that tho necessary loan could be secured. i After some further discussion it was decided, at the sggestion of the chair-* I Bum, to leave the consideration of tho question to te dealt with by the incoming Board. Election of New Board. — Com. Ilott moved that the clerk be instruotod to communicate with Mr H. Crump, Returning Officer to the Board, requesting him to take the necessary steps for the carrying outof the election of|a new Board. This was seconded by the chairman and carried.
