JUDGE GILLIES ON THE LUNATIC ASYLUM. STARTLING STATEMENT.
AUCKLAND, Lust Night At the Supreme Court, in chambers thi^ morning", Judge Gillies heard a motion for the examination of an alleged lunatic named Ralph Fenwick, now in the lunatic asylum ; the petitioner being the wife of the alleged lunatic. His Honor considered the matter very carefully, and in the course of argument he stated that he was sure that there were many persons in the asylum who ought not to be there. He also thought that the fullest publicity should be given to such examinations, and that where it was possible such examinations should always take place before a jury. He fixed that the examination of Fenwick should take place on Friday in Court.
