A Supposed Disaster at Sea.
The Cape 'Argus' of June sth contains the following particulars concerning what ls surmised to be a disaster at sea, and which 1 was recently referred to in our cable, grams, when, for some unknown reason, the locality was shifted to the Spanish coast: — 'The C.R.M.S. Drummond | Castle, Captain J. Winchester, arrived from coast ports at about 12.30 a.m yesterday, and reported having seen a vessel founder off Cape L'Agulhas on the previous morning about 3.30. The Drummond Castle was unable to render any assistance owing to a very heavy sea 1 and all lives are f>uppo&ed to be lost. Nothing is known about the vessel, not even her name. The following is Captain Winchester's report of the foundering of the vessel: — June 3rd — During a fresh gale I from the west - north - wesb, when Cape [ L'Agulhas lighthouse bore east by north, ! J3 miles, at 9.40 p.m., observed signal? jof distress, to westward. Bore down bo i the distressed &hip, going as close to her a.s practicable. At midnight passed close by the distressed ship, when found her to lie a large vessel with foremast and stump of minzenmast ; cargo apparently having shifted. When passing to leeward, in hopes sho might get her boats away, she hailed us, but all we could distincrui&h was, " I have lost my boats." I then determined to remain by the ship until daylight, as, owing to the heavy and confused sea, it was impossible to get one of my boats away with any prospect of success. Remained in close pro.ximity to the distressed ship, never losing sight of her until half-past three a.m. June 4th, when she suddenly disappeared, After this saw a light at intervals for about 2 hours, so, thinking some of the crew might be on the wreckage, remained in position until 6 o'clock a.m., when I went ahead over the course we had drifted but failed to see anything, so proceeded. Position ship supposed to have foundered in Cape L'Agulhas, west-south west, 15 miles.'
