A FIRE CHECKED. (BY TELEGRAPH. — PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Greymouth, July 8.
The town had a narrow escape from a destructive fire this morning. About seven o'clock Robert Kettle, grocer, next the Melbourne Hotel, was awakened by a choking sensation from smoke. He rushed out, and found a small office beneath the staircase in flames, and smoke and flame ascending the stairs to where the family resides. Fortunately a bath tub of water was handy, and without stopping to give the alarm ho fought the fire for a quarter of an hour until he got it under. By this time a passing milkboy had raised the alarm, and the brigade were soon on the spot. When the charred timber was torn down they found that the piles under the chimney weie also on fire. Nothing but Kettle's exertions and presence of mind prevented a serious fire. The damage is compaiatively slight. The build ng is insured for £450 in the New Zealand oftice. The lire must have been smouldering all night.
