TERRIBLE SCENE IN A THEATRE.
An exciting scene was witnessed recently at the Variety Theatre at Boltou. Every night Madame Mather enters a cage containing nine wolves, with which she performs. During her performance one Tuesday nigh trecently, the wolf which replaced one which had been worried to death at New Brighton last week by its companions, turned on the lady, and bib her severely in the leg. The sight ot blood appears to have aroused the ferocious nature of the animals, and Madame Mathor had scarcely got out of the cage when they fell upon each other in the most savage fashion, rolling from side to side ot the cage, and tearing each other. Fortunately the curtain was down, and the audience, passing out, knew nothing of what ,vas going on behind. Amongst the ni-lhtes and staff of the theatre, however, the greatest alarm prevailed. Trotman, the keeper of the animals, had to be fetched frprn his lodgings, and- by taking drastic measures separated the fighting animals, one of which was nearly dead. Madame Mather was bitten severely in the thigh, this being thte third time the animals have attacked her in onoweok. The wolves were recently imported from Siberia by Mr Crofoti ot Liverpool.
