■ Thames, July 3. Caiubria. — When breaking down the main reef in the winze at the intermediate level to-day, 41b of picked stone were secured. Colours of gold were seen freely disnibuted through the quartz. Caledonian.— The manager banked yesterday ' 316z 17dwt gold, 16oz lldwt of which was the result of five loads crushed from the leader in the winze below No. 2 level, and the remainder, soz 6dwt, from 35 loads quartz, taken from the junction of Nos. 1 and 2, reefs with the Young American leader at No. 1 fevel. In both instances the returns are very encouraging, and warrant fuither prospecting at both points'. Surprise (Puriri). — The proprietors of this claim have banked 15oz lodwt gold, as the result of the treatment of 7 tons quartz. ' The crushing of another parcel is now proceeding. Trenton. — The contractors have sunk 5 feet daring the week and the depth of the shaft is now 349 feet. Colonist. — Dabs of gold are showing in the low level. , THE BIG PUMP QUESTION. The monthly meeting of the Drainage Board was held today, afc which a letter was read from the Government, stating that the proposal to allocate the gold duty obtained from mines wifchin the drainage area for the purpose of maintaining the Big Pump, was a question for settlement between the Board and the Local Bodies. It wa3 deciddd to insure the Big Pump for a sum not exceeding £1,000. It was also resolved to obtain the promised £2,000 from Government for substituting water for steam as the motive power. July 4. Cambria. —The mine manager reports that the diive is now in a distance of 40 feefc from the cross-cub at No 4 level, which leaves oLher 25 feet to be driven to the point where the drive will be turned to drive straight across the claim for the winze sunk on No. 7 leader. This' latter drive will cub all the leaders at right angles. The remaining 25 feet will be completed in about another 7 days, when the drive across the claim above alluded to will be commenced. The tee drive .is . going through a splendid class of country for goldbearing leaders. The wiuze on fche main reef on the intermediate level east is down a depth of 21 feet. Gold was seen freely through the quartz in the hanging wall portion of the reef yestei day, when 4 pound* of picked stone came to hand. Trenton.— Athough the hard rock still continues in the bottom of the shaft, it may give out at any time, as the operations of the company through the Saxon determined thab the auriferous strata of country will be met with in the shaft long before it is sunk to its intended depth. New Albtjrnia. — The mine manager reports :—": — " During the past week work has been continued in the stopes above the battery level on what is known as Job's leader. This improves as the stopes are carried east ; although no great hauls of picked stone are coming to hand, still gold is seen at every breaking down. About 101b of picked stone have been saved for the week, and the quartz coining to hand is of a payable character. New Manitkad". — The mine manager reports : The No. 5 stope is turning out good payable dirt. Mulligan's leader is now making in the back of stope west of the winze on fche third sbope. I have started to open up a block east of the winze to boundary, for I find I cannot make end ground at the winze, so it will be ad-vi-ablo to extend the block the eastern boundary, when 1 can take out the small leaders met with in the footwall, and some of them look very promising for gold. They will pay to take out when opened out in this way. Saxon. — The No. 1 footwallleader has not yeb been' cub in the crosscut at No. 3 level, bub it should be to hand any .shift. Waiotahi. — The monthly cleaning up produced 2470z lOdwb of gold from 200 tons of quartz.
