SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The usual monthly meeting of the Te Aroha School Oommifcteo was held on Monday evening last, the Rev. James Marshall presiding. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Monthly Returns :— Tha monthly i returns were submitted. The number of children on the roll are 137 an I the attendance during the past month was 107.6, the average Fir the quarter being 112. The falling off in the attendance was discussed at some length together with the best mean'? of getting absentees to attend more regularly. It was suggested that the roll should be produce! at the committee meetings and the names of those absent shown. Rev. Mr Lawry stated that tho compulsory clauses of the Act only required tho children to attend one-half of the total school days of the quarter, but as they had no Inspector it would be found very awkward to force the attendance in this way. It wa3 ultimately decided to request the head teacher to furnish the names to tho committee of those children who do not attend thirty days in the quarter. Repairs :— The secretary reported that several broken panea of glass had been replaced. There were now some 17 or 18 panes slightly cracked, but it was not thought necessary to replace them, It was stated that the breakage was mainly owing to the swaying of the building in rough weather, The visiting committee reported that the spouting round the eaves required repairs and it was determined to have the leakage attended to. Drainage Work : — Tho head master complained of the muddy state of the pathway in front of the school, caused by a (low of water from the road, which was higher than the ground by the building. A water channel wa<3 required outside tho school fence. The secretary was directed to communicate with the Town Board on the subject. Cleaning School : — The secretary stated that Mrs Griffiths had agreed to do the necessary cleaning, lighting, etc. : etc. for one year for tho sum of £1 1, the Committee to supply materials. — It was decided to accept Mrs Griffiths offer. Accounts :— The following accounts were passed for payment : Firewood, 10s ; cleaning, £1 3s. The chairman stated that the funds were now very low and that some means would have to be devised to raise money. Ho thought an entertainment would be a good' way to obtain funds. Some other suggestians were mado but nothing definite was determined upon, and the consideration of the question of funds was postponed.

A new and moro commodious school has been found neeessmy owing to a large increase in the number of students. . A single sheet of pnper..72 i-ncbes w.ide and 7f miies long" was made without a Weak. .at the Remington Paper Company's mill at Watertown, New York, a few days' ago. The gheet weighed seven pounds over a ton.
