AUCKLAND CUSTOM HOUSE CONTRACT. WELLINGTON, Last Night. I Jon. Mn Mitchelson stated in the House last night that the statement that inferior bricks were being used in building the new Custom House at Auckland, originated in forged telegrams sent from Auckland, and believed to have been instigated by jealousy on the part of other contractors-

FURTHER RETRENCHMENT. The Retrenchment Committee ot Wellington will ask tbc Government during the recess to undertake further retrenchment to extend £100,000 'at least. A petition fiom George Lipsey and others relative to lands at Te Aroha has been referred to the Government for favourable consideration ; also petitions from Waikato County Council and Tauranga people in favour of special settlement at Te Puna.
LATEST FROM AUCKLAND. ♦— ■ THE CAUSE OF THE HAWEA BEING WRECKED. A thorough search was made at New Plymouth Harbour to-day for the rocks on which the Hawea was alleged to have struck, but no rock was found.
FIRE. A fire broke out in Mount Eden Road this evening and destroyed a sevenroomed house belonging to a Mr Given. Insurance L2OO in the Royal Insurance Company.
THE GOLDEN CHARIOT BUSINESS. Frank Ryan, a strong man 30 years of ago, is in the hosipifcal critically ill willi erysipelas which followed upon his getting a tooth extracted at the " Golden Chariot/ and his recovery is considered doubtful. Ryan states the operation was very painful, and within an hour after his cheeks swelled to such an extent that he was perfectly blind.

LATEST FROM THAMES . — * A PAINFUL ACCIDENT. Thames, Last NighK A young man named Edward MiJnes met vrith a painful accident yesterday. j He was assisting in unloading a cartload i of firewood when one of the logs slipped and fell on his leg, breaking it. Thos. Morton was sentenced to seven days hard labour today, for using obscene language. A local publican was today fined £1 and oosts for selling liquor after hours, and £1 for employing a barmaid after 11 p.m.
