OHINEMURI. (From Our Own Correspondent.)

The chief matter for congratulation this week is the commencement to erect a furnace, on the principle patented by Mr Alex, Parkes and under his personal supervision, in the La Monte Furnace house at Karangahake. The old furnace is being taken down and the new one will without delay be erected in its pi nee. Mr Ghambers expects the plant will be ready to treat ores in about four or five weeks,

and is even prepared to purchase ore immediately. Quartz will be purchased on aslidingscale ofprices, at a percentage on the fire assay value. The scale ranges from 20 per cent on ore worth £8 to 75 per cent on £100 ore. The ore on delivery will be crushed and then sampled ; three samples being taken in each case, one of wbich tbo seller may have assayed by his own nominee, one tbe furnace proprietors will have assayed, and the third sample will be sealed upjfor future arbitration purposes if so required. Any person taking ore to the furnace for sale may after it has been assayed use his own discretion as to whether he disposes of it ornot, butwillbechargeda small sum (ss) per ton, for crushing in the stone breaker if he declines to complete the scale. Ore will have to be delivered at the furnace free of extra charge. The appearance of the whole thing is " business " and as the scale, while leaving a fair margin, is extremely liberal there should be no manner of doubt as to the immediate success of the plant. A gentleman -well qualified to jadgo informs me that the scale of prices given by the Saxony Works at Frieburg cannot touch this. It is stated that if the small Pavkes plant now being erected is successful, a plant on a large scale will be put up near the junction at Paeroa. Not only at Karangahake, but in all parts of the field, there is generally a more hopeful tone in mining matters, which has for its origin the feeling that there is something more staple in what is now being clone. At Waitekauri, the company's mine has been floated in Sydney, the price paid foy the mine and battery being LBOOO. This may be oonsidered a large price, but it must be remembered that i over LBO,OOO worth of gold has been taken from the ground, which, even now, j has not been half worked. It is said that the Mararoa and Mariposa Special Claims at Waitekauri have also been syndicated. The Saxon ground is in a fair way to be disposed of at a .icasonable figure. Messrs Quaylo and Whiteside, two members of a Sydney syndicate (who are associated with Mr Kerry of New Guinea fame) in the purchase of the Arizona at Marototo, arrived here last week to close for the same. Mr* Quayle is also largely interested in the Waitekauri Company's mine, just floated. Things nra steadily ptogressing at Waihi. Tenders are called for driving 150 feet. The Dart machinery is all on the ground. lam afraid much of it will have to be replaced ; it having greatly deprecatiated after fourteen years under ground. The Ohinemuri Licensing Committee meet for a third time to-morrow, for the adjourned annual meeting to decide re Hosie's license at Otvhnroa. I understand that the licensee of one of the oufcclistrict hotels, not having conic up to time in the payment of his license fee, will lose his license. The question of a local Warden's Court is still " under consideration " by the Justice
