Tk Aroha S. and (J. M. Go's Property — New Water Race : — Fair progress is being made with the new wate*" race now in course of construction by the contractors, Messis Burbidge and Wilson ; ami the flrst section of the race has now been cut a distanc eof about fifty chains, nine men being employed at this work. Returns : — The Battery and Tailings Plant have been employed much as last reported, and retorting took place on Saturday last, resulting in a yield of 214 ozs of melted gold from 200 trucks treated during the previous month. The Mines : — New Find portion of the Co's property : — Work in the several drives and cross cots is steadily progressing. The drive in the 450 feet level has now been driven on tho reef a distance of about 17 feet. The country being passed through still continues t:> be of^ a very kindly nature for gold ; and goo 1 progress is being made with the work in hand. The 900 feet level is now in a distance of about 30 feet ; and the contractors (Wiseman and party) are now making better progress with the work, the ground having considerably improved during the ' last few days. In the 400 feet crosscut tho country still continues to prove very hard for driving, and consequently but slow pro- I gress is being made with this work. j Other Works : — The drive on the Galena reef is now in a distance of 50 ! feet, and the stone now coming to grass from this drive is of a very refractory nature. The drive on the May Queen reef is also in a distance of about 50 feet, the work is progressing satisfactorily, and latterly this reef has improved in appearance. In the Silver King portion of the Co.'s property work is progressing satisfactorily, and the drives, both north and south, are being pushed ahead ; and the country continues to be of a very kindly nature. Colonist Mine : — Good progress is being made with the drive in tho low level on the Hero reef, and a little gold was seen in tho face during the past week. New Reef Discovered :— Prospecting operations have been (and still are) carried on vigorously on the To Aroha S. and G. M. Co.'c property since tho Company tooic possession ; Mr John Goldsworthy having charge of this branch of the work. The prospectors recently^ discovered a new reel' in that
portion of the property formerly known ns the Army mine. Mr Adams, the Co.'s manager, has taken prompt steps to havethis reef opened up,and onWednesday last the following tenders were received for driving 100 feet (more or less), on this reef (called GoldswortbyY), the tenders being at per foot : Southey and party, £1 14s Gd ; J. Shea, £1 13s ; J. McLeod, £1 12s Gd ; J. Hawkins, £1 9s ; S. McKercher, £1 8s 6d ; J. FWin, £1 7s 9d ; J. Naughton, £1 7s Gd ; Courtney and party, £1 5s : J. Walsh, £1 2s 6d ; A. Brownefcfc, ' £1 Is ; Hughes anJ party, £1 ; A. Burchell (accepted), 19s 6d. Mr H. H. Adams left for Auckland yesterday, to meet Mr Ho well, the wellknown mining expert from America, who is to arrive by the incoming mail steamer from Ban Francisco on a visit to the Te A. S, and G. M. Co's pro1 perty, to advise as to the most suitable plant for erection for the treatment of the quartz on a large scale. Recent advices from Melbourne state that Mr W. R. Wilson will be able to come over this time himself after all, which is a matter of great satisfaction. Mr Wilson was to leave for Auckland Thursday last, and may therefore be expected here next week. It is almost superfluous to state Mr Wilson has cairied out his intentions as expressed before he left for Melbourne, on the occasion of his former visit, viz., to arrange -with the most skilful and experienced mining expertobtainable to visit ths fiield, and advise R3 to the moat suitable class of smelter, or other reduction works, for the treatment on a large and systematic scale of the ore obtainable on the Waiorongomai goldfield.
