MINING NEWS.
Cokomandel, June 14. Roy\i. Oak. — Since last) report there has boon a Blight change for the better in the mine. The footwall reef is improving in hize, and continues to show blotches of gold. This reef has carried gold from the level up, and the ground still continues favourable-looking for making gold. The tributers have broken down their reef, which resulted in a few stones showing gold. The next stope looks more favourable, the reef being more defined.-- Pjotku Ricid, mine j manage) .
Thames, June 16. CAiMintiA. — Jn a telegram yesterday, I mentioned that about thirty of the employees of this Company had received notice that their .services would not bo required after to-day. This was somewhat of ahuipii.se to the men, bufc ha« been rendered necessaiy owing to the block.s on the vai ious leaders above No. 3 level being almost exhausted, and the fact that no picked stone has been obtained lately, sothat the quartz has not been shaping so well at the batteiy. The main ice! is now being opened up as quickly a.s possible at No. 4 level, however, and the manager is sanguine of ultimately meeting with payable quart/, in which ca^e he will be in a position to again increase the staff. There are still 20 men employed in the mine. The crosscut on the main reef at No. 4 level is being continued, and it is expected that communication will be effected this after noon with the winze Mink on the .same lode iiom No. 3 level. There i.s no change to jcpoi t horn any other part of the mine. i Tuhvrov — The sinking of the shaft is ipiocecding, but the country being penetrated is hard rock, so that progress is necessarily slow. None of the tenders received for sinking a further 100 feet have yet been accepted, pending a report from the manager as to whether it would not be advisable to continue sinking for a time with wages men, as the country may impiove shoitly. Saxcn. — The reef above No. 3 level looks very well in the leading stope, and colours of gold arc freely discernible in the quartz c\ery breaking down, while occasional hauls of picked stone are also obtained. The ciushing is shaping payably. Camrkta. — The main reef was touched to-day in the crosscut at No. 4 level. Strong colours of gold are showing in the face. This is of gome importance, as it is the first gold seen at this level. Cambkiy. — The prospects of this mine have impro\ed considerably during fche last day or two, as, in addition to the fact that strong colours of gold have been observed in the main reef in the crosscut at No. 4 le\ el, colours of the precious metal are also seen freely distributed through the hanging-wall portion of the same lode at the intermediate level, whoic the sinking of a winze has just been commenced. In the crosscut at No. 4 level it is impossible to determine whether it i> the hanpingwall or the footwall of the main reef that now occupies the face, as this lode is lying very Hat and a " break " is evidently being passed through. The drive is .still penetidfcing the quu.it/., which is of a favourable description, and colours of gold were again seen when breaking down on Saturday. Operations aie at a stand .still until to-monow, as the annual inspection of the boilei is now taking place. Tklnton. — The contractois aic making slow progress with the sinking of the shaft, as the country continues hard rock. j
