THE CHINESE CONFERENCESIR GEORGE GREY AND MR OLIVER.
Wellington, June 7. Tururc was an earnest passage at arms between Mr Oliver, delegate from New Zealand, and Sir George Giey over the Chinese question just outside the Parliamentary bialding-rf yestei-day afternoon. Sir (ieorge Giey and Mr W, L. Reea met Mr Oliver, who asked Sir George for some leading ideas on the Chinese question, mentioning that he was just about leaving foi Sydney. Sir Geoi^e Grey refused on the ground that the Hill, as altered by the Legislative Council with the assent oi the Go\ernment, would in leahty work the veiy eviU that the people of New Zealand defied to pro\enl ; that the Council's action would admit all I hine.se native born subjects oi the Ci own into the colony, and that e\entually thi\ would be extended 'to all coloured people, and lead to the Empire being broken up. 31 1 Oliver replied that it was not so at all, and that he would be no party fcoanys-uch tiansaction. He emphatically declared that the Hill, a? altered by the Counoil, was not .«o wide in its. scope, as wat alleged. Sir Georoe Giey insisted that it \sa>,, whereupon Mr Oliver became very energetic in his denial, and said that he would not have become a delegate if it did. He argued that the Bill only" admitted those Chinese who were natuialised citizens ot New Zealand, and not naturalised in any other colony or native-born biibjocts of the Queen fiom Hong Kong, or Singapore, or other places. After Sir George Grey had expressed his surprise that Mr Oliver was not better informed ad to the nature of the amendments made in the Chinese Immigration Bill, fclic interview terminated.
