RUSSIA AS AN EXPORTER OF LIVE STOCK.
Tin; condition of Russian agriculture is pictured in daik colours by the Russian Department of Agriculture. There is a continuous and progressive fall in the prices of agricultural {product! of e\ory kind, and flic competition of India and Amciica is beginning to make it-elt severely felt. Russia ha- old-iaslnoncd modes of cnltivalion and an indiflorcnt oigaui/ation for the export trade ; and jet it i* necessary for the piosperity of the country that a considerable proportion of its agricultural p-oductions should find a sale in foreign maikcts. As to its livestock, the department thinks that the time ha> anived -when Russia can come forward with considerable chance of success to com pete with Americaand other countries in supplying the Western European markets with live stock. Sho has great advantages in this business when the piicos of live cattle and meat in Russia are compared, for insfcince, with those which prevail in England. As compared with America and Australia, the greater proximity of Russia to the European market", and the low rates prevailing for sea freights are advantages not to be overlooked. There is no doubt, tooj that there exists a great field for the further extension of cattle-raising in Russia, which till now has been somewhat neglected. The present moment is especially favourable for such a development, as the extremely low price of cereals oilers an exceptional opportunity for breeding and fattening cattle at a quite nominal figure.
The Spanish Government lias prohibited the use of gas in theatres, and inado the use of the eleetvic light compulsory within six months.
