PUNT AT MURPHY'S LANDING.
(To Tiik Editor). Sir,— Without infringing too much on your space J wish to reply to Mr Murphy's t'oather-woight in last Wednesday's issue, and am sorry Cor him thnt ho has put his loot a little furthci into tho miro than there wa<? any occasion for, as.he writes that, 'not a single shilling of ratepayers' money was ever expended in either fencing or draining his land, when tho lowest formal tender received by tho Waitoa Head P.n-ml, for cutting an outfall drain and forming a road across a swamp in Mr Murphy's section was -£14 10s ; in addition to that there was £0 granted for making tho appi ouches to tho punt, and I believe an additional £2 for making some very tiivial cuttings on tho lino of road: rf that is not spending ratepayers' money in improving his section, I do not know what else it is. So that if not a shilling singly wns epent on it, tho total goes well up into the hundreds. And still the fact remains than whilo Cr Murphy in tho Council often makes use of the word convenience, as applied to his own, or others in whom he takes an interest, lie should have so utterly ignored tho convenience of all persons using his punt, as to threaten to Rtop it without as much as saying " by your leave." Murphy's punt is a convenience to many though tho charges on it are far too high, — [ am, etc., 11. J. Hawkins. To ArohaWcbt.
