I takk the following- from the "Chinese Times " :— A. Hanlin, discussing with a ioieigner the principles of astronomy, said he knew the earth was round, but as for the Christian doctrine of its revolution round the sun it was quite erroneous. ' How, then,' he was asked, c is the earth sustained in its position f 'By the circumambient air,' ho replied, 'just like a pea in a bladder. If you put a pea in a bladder and then inflate it, the pea will occupy the centic' 'Not so,' said the foreigner, 'it will Kittle about, always falling to the lowest side.' 'Ah ! well, 1 coniebs I never tried the experiment,' said the Chinese philosopher, 'but they all say the pea is baUncod in tho centre'
