OHINEMURI. (From Our own Correspondent).
Thanks to the abundance of water the Waiteknuri and Owharoa batteries have been going 1 on full time for the past few 1 weeks. The- first returns arc just to hand and are as follows :— Frearson and party, Owharoa, 29ozs from 45 tons, value 50s per oh. i Fanner and party, Owharoa (Smile), 151oz, (melted; from about 220 tons. j Birnio and Goodwin, Waitekauri, 3G0!5, (melted), value about L 2 13s Gd per ounce. At Wai hi Mr 17. G. Farmer has just taken a contract for the building of the i machine and engine house for LillO, (labour only). Mr E M. Corbett is the architect, and the building when com- | plotrd will be n strong and massive structure. i The Dart pumping gear is still at i Paeioa and will probably stay there until the spring, the roads being too far gone this season to admit of heavy traffic. At Karangahako matters are nearly at a standstill, excepting in the various tribute?. The tributers in the Woodstock and Kenilworth arc still on good ore, indeed these are about the only portions of Karaugahakc in which bona (ido work is being done. A tremendous area of ground is locked up and any person prospecting and discovering anything good is nine times out of* ton expending ', his lime and trouble in discovering it for ?onn> person who has the ground pegged off. ! At Wailekauii, Mason anil party are gel ting Ihrough a lot of dead work in ilu> Yount> Now Zealand, and expect yood J payment tor their tioublc shortly. | Hkcne is blill on good ore in the ; Saxon (bite Kdip.se), and oxjx'ots n good return .shortly liom a small parcel of specimen «(uiT ho ii s'lWiiij 1 troni the .general dirt,. '
Tlic Karangahako telephone has again boon put into gear, ami was re-opened on Saturday last, Mr Alfred Shepherd is now postmaster, vice Mr Alex. Hogg, and also taken charge of the telephone. Mr Reischek, the celebrated Viennese naturalist, who is now touring the colony on behalf of several Geographical, and other societies in Europe, paid ft flying visit to Ohincrnuri on Saturday last, lie informed me that he was greatly surprised to see such a iich mineral country, atul wus especially struck with the Tui ores. He was conducted through (he Tui mines by Mr Comes, and brought away several samples of the ore, which ho will send to the Vienna museum. There are rumours of another rich find between Murototo and Waitckauri. ] am informed on very good authority that Mr Parkes has no! yet given up the idea of erecting his plant, at the Junction, P/ieroa. He was olTeied a site by Sir Philip "Bennett, v> ho owns a block there, at his own teuns, and would in all piolmbiliUi ha\e accepted it, had i;ot j-ome person told him tl.eie was six feet of water there in flood time. As a matter of fact the site olTcicd k never anvthinu hut high and diy. As a site tins portion of the distiict offers great advantages, it being central between Marototo, Waik'kuori, and K.irangahakc districts on the one side, and Tui and Aroha districts on the other ; while 1 hames oics could be brought np at a mtninmum cost. It is also within a stone's thiow of the railway lino. If, as if, is understood, Messts Chambeis and Parkes intend buying ores from the upper districts, cheapness in transit will be one of the greatest incentives to owners in sending it to the plant. At the Junction both ores, fuel, and fluxes can be brought, at a lower cost, than to any other point on the whole of the Colvillo Peninsula. A summons has been issued against several persons for blasting logs iv the main street of the township during the recent fresh. Some of the fragments of wood were sent clean over the houses.
