OHINEMURI.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) The heavy rain which fell on Friday and Saturday last caused the Ohinemuri River to rise some 18 feefc above its natural height. Tho water rose very rapidly and was at its height on Sunday morning. Profiting by past experience, the agents for the two steamers trading to Paeroa quickly cleared their stores, both of which became flooded. The new River Conservancy Board when formed should turn their attention to the banks, which are rapidly falling away. A few willows planted during the coming season would do a great deal towards remedying this. Owing to the receent appearance of typhoid fever in Ohinemuri, the (Inspector of Nuisances has received strict injunctions to carry out the provisions of the Health Act to the letter. Mrs Nicks, long known as the genial hostessof the Paeioa Hotel, was married at thoMansebytheßev|MrNeill,Thames,Jast week to Mr J. 11. Moore, the well-known and respected mine manager of Marototo. Their friends, whose name i 3 legion, combine in wishing them long life and happiness. The Paeroa Post and Telegraph office will be closed for the future between 7 and 8 p.m. This will be a great inconvenience to all classes and it is to be hoped that the department will reconsider the matter and open the office in the evenings. The infant daughter of Mr and Mrs A. Ca^rells of Paeroa, died on Sunday of croup after a shoit illuess. Much sympathy is felt for the bereaved parents who but recently buried another little one who died from the same treacherous disease. The first consignment (31 tons) of the Dart pumping machinery arrived at the Paeroa Wharf last week. This was brought up by the cutter " Trial." The boiler weighing some 8 tons will be bronght overland from the Bart shaft to Wailii. At Waitekanri, Birney and Goodwin in the Welcome claim, have got some rich quaitz to grass, which assays splendidly They intend to send a parcel to Frieburg. I Butler and other well known mining men have each applied for large areas on t,ln"9 run. At Karanffahake, the Woodstock, Kenilworth, tvnnhoe, and Truro are still looking very well. There is little doing in the other mines. Mr A. Lockwood is said to have a "good thing" at Rotokohn, and a lease for a thirty | acre claim has been applied for. Seveial changes are about to bo made in tho personnel of the teaching staff of the Paeroa School. Owing to enforced retrenchment, the services of Miss Hale who has been teaching on probation for some six or nine months, are to be dispensed with, -and Miss Mtiry Bleakley lias sent in her resignation, being about to proceed to Victoria. The new County Courcil Offices, which are to be built on the County's freehold allotments on the Ohinemuri Township, will be most convenient buildings. Mr W. Tetley is the architect and has drawn np very creditable plans of the proposed buildings, which will face the Belmont Koacl. The Library building at present temporarily placed on Mrjßobson's section at Paeroa, will most likely bo shifted down to the site generously donated by the County Council. Mr J. McCombie has accepted Jno. Kellys tender for driving 100 feet on the Truro reef, Karangahake at 17s per foot. Other contracts are to be shortly let. A reward of £5 is offered by Mr Gr. M. Corbefct for information leading to the conviction of tho persons who have recently carried stone away from the Jubilee Claim at Waitekauri. It is stated that a box of quartz has been taken away, and that persons nre in tho habit of picking over the stone and getting it crushed regularly. Mr Corbett has determined to put a stop to this. The honso at Owharoa, hitherto licensed as an accommodation house to Mr James Hogie, is it is said about to change hands, A publican's license is being applied for by Mr Hosie instead of an accommodation license. Crushing is proceeding at Waihi, Waitokauri and Owharoa Batteries. Some very fair dirt is going through especially at Waitekauri, where Birny and Goodwin have been getting some splendid stuff lately. At Waihi Mr J. W. Walker has nearly finished excavating, and is calling for tenders for the mill and engine house erection. Queen's Birthday is to be celebratod by sports and a ball at Mackaytown.
