WELLINGTON NOTES. Wollington, April 23.

Uxdkr the heading " Retrenchment in Pensions '* the " Evening Post " recently penned a tirade against the Government for an alleged "attempt to induce ceitain military pensioners to commute their pensions." The "Press" says: "It will probably not surprise our readers to learn that the attempt in question is utterly without any foundation in fact, and that on the contrary a disposition on the part of a pensioner to endeavour to raise a lump sum by the means referred to was promptly checked by the authorities. The .slender fabric of truth on which the article in our contemporary was based is this : A military pensioner up North did apply to the Government for permission to commute his pension in the way alluded to, but he was at once informed that such a proposal could not for a moment be entertained."
