Jn tho country districts of England railway trailic has been impeded, several persons have been lo.st in tho snow, and cattle liavo boon cut of)' fioin help. In Dorbyshiie the snow in some places h irom 6 to 10 tcet deep. Tho lovely dales of this picturesque country are blocked with miow and ice. Steeplechases in various parts of the country have been postponed from day to day. The Waleiloo Cup meeting at Liverpool lias been postponed for the third or iourth time. Ln Switzerland and Noi thorn ftaly vast avalanches have shut up Hues of trallic by road and vail ; villages have been buried, and much loss of lite is reported. Travellers overland to join tho Australian and other outward-bound vessels are delayed in London in consequence of tho obstructions on tho Mont Con is tunnel. Serious reports come from Madrid, ln the province of Oviedo railway bridges and villages havo been crushed and cloven lives lost. On the Ist of March in London, glimpses of brilliant and welcome sunshine havo accompanied the snowy outlook, and tho intensity of the cold has much abated. It seems paradoxical to say that tho skating championship race has had to bo postponed ; but falls of snow intorferd with skating. The champion, Mr Ucorgc Smart, holds the belt, and receives a salary from the Skating Association ; so this championship is more or less unique. Tho English champion's brothor wont over to Holland this week, and won tho Inter-
national Skating Race at Amsterdam. " Smart by name and Smart by nature, arc the Smart family. There are several of them, it id said, quite equal to James, and largo bets are made that ; tho English championship is not allowed to go out of the family.
