OHINEMURI COUNTY COUNCIL.

Til re above Council held their orclinnry monthly meeting: at Paeroa on Saturday lust, adjourned from Saturday the 7th inst. Present, Crs. Nicholls, (Chairman), Dearie, Rouson, Moore, Strange, Quinn and Nash. The minutes of the previous general and special meetings were read and confirmed. Correspondence : — A synopsis of the outward correspondence was read as follows :—: — To th'j Receiver General, Wellington, in reforenco to certain sums of gold fields revenue accruing from licenses at Tui, Te Aroha, allowed to have been wrongly allocated to Piako County. To Colonial Secretary, Wellington, with reference to the extended jurisdiction granted Thames Uarbour Board, and requesting that the Pioc'amation granting tho same bo rescinded. Inwaid. — Visit of Minister of Public Works :— From Mr A. J. Cadmarj, IM. 11. R-, stating the date of the Hon Mr Mitchclsou's visit to the Thames. Crs Robson and J. H. Moore stated in reference to this matter, that they had interviewed the Hon Minister for Public Works in regard to several matters relative to the advance ment of the district, and had been most courteously received by Mrj Mitchelson.

Good would undoubtedly result from his visit. Slaughter-house License : — From Messrs Murk and Tnthill, Wuilii Road, (Karls), applying for a Slaughter-house license and enclosing usual foe of £5. Granted. Meeting of Ratepayers re Loan : — From Mr W. Littlejohn who had heen appointed Chainn.in of the statutory meeting of ratepayers nt Karangahake Riding, concerning the proposed £1100 loan, vice Cr E. Quirin who had resigned the office of Chairman. Mr Littlejohn leported that there was a decided opposition to the loan visible at the meeting. In reference to this matter, it appeared that the Karanirahake representatives, together with their constituents were opposed to the loan on account of the alleged neglect of.' their portion of the district. Ors Nash tnd Quinn stated that £50 had heen granted l»y the Council for certain repairs to the Mackaytown-Karan^ahake Road, the lowest tender for the said repairs being £63. They thought that for a matter of £13 the tender should have bean accepted, and a most necessary work done. Cr Robson rose to explain, and said that the tender for J£G3 would only do about one half the work which the £50 was allocated for. tie thought the member for Karangahake had taken a wrong step in thus acting in regard to the loan. The Chairman stated that he was sorry to see any bias among Councillors against the loan. They all knew the position of affairs, whioh was, that they owed the Thames County a large sum, which would swallow nearly all their revenue to liquidate. Without (the loan,! it would be extremely* difficult to cairy on the business of the County, as their finances would be seriously crippled. A heated discussion took place, in which Crs Quinn and Nash declared that they would fight their hardest against the Joan. The latter Councillor intimated that if the £63 tender for the Maekaytown-Karangahake Road were accepted he would alter his tactics and work in favor of the loan. CrQuinn, said, that nothing would now alter his intention of voting and working against it. He considered that his constituents were badly treated. Hospital and Charitable Aid. — From the Secretary, "Thames and Coromandel Charitable Aid Board, enclosing schedule of charges on contributing local bodies, also demanding the sum of £124 Ids od, being proportion to he paid by Ohinemuri from April Ist, 1888, to March 31st, 1889. Re Road Contract. —From Mr Lindsay Jackson, certifying to the satisfactory completion of Mr Kennedy's contract near the T.irariki Creek. Drain Clearing— From Mr IT. C. Wick, informing the Council that unless the County drain which ran through his land on the Puke Road were not properly cleared, he should proceed at law for recovery of any dam itre.s that might accrue by the oveiflow — Refeired to County Solicitor. Main County Road — Joint applications were then road from the Chief Postmaster, Thames, and MrJTijos. Site for Public Libiary — Prom tho Secretary of the Public Libiaiy, requesting that the Council should gr.mt a --it< on one of the freehold allotments on Fr.i^er'^ township for the Library building. Granted. K'irth Removal. — From Messrs Jno. Granted. The Acting Engineer to supervise. Hospital and Charitable Aid Board Demands. — From the Secretary, Thames Hospital Board, demanding £138 lHs lid balance overdue by Ohineinuii Comity to the Board. From the Secretary, Thames Hospital Board demanding £107 18s lid, balance overdue by the Ohinemuri County to the Boird. From the Secretary, Thames Hospital Boird demanding £106 8s 3d, being amount of Ohinemuri County's contribution for 1888-9. County Boundary. — From Mr G. S. Cooper, Wellington, stating that the authorities h id decided that the northern boundary of the County (which was disputed as it at present appeared on the maps by the Thames County, as incorrect), would be regarded as topographically correct as at piesent on the Survej' maps, and would be bona-fidrt the County Boundary. Resignations. — From Cr Quinn, resigning his position as Chairman and Returning Officer of the meeting re loan at Karangahake. The Chairman reported having appointed Mr Win. Littlejohn to the position. This the Council confirmed. From Mr Lindsay Jackson resigning his position as County Engineer. Resignation received and accepted. . Goldfields Revenue.— From Mr J. C. Gavin, Undei -Secretary 'to the Treasury, informing the Council that the alleged wrongful allocation of tlie reserve from the Tui mines was being duly inquired into. Finance Repoit. — The report of the Finance Committee was road bv the Chairman in the absence of the Chairman of the committee, (Cr Corbett). Accounts were passed to the amount o £228 10s sd. Receired and adopted. Rangiora Road. — From Mr Lindsay Jackson re Rangioria .Road repairs, recommending that the Council should expend tho balance of the Government Grant of £19 ; also that material bo found for a bridge as required, the settlors providing the labor. On the motion of Crs Robson and Strange, it was resolved to expend £25 when the balance of the grant waa available. License Necessaiy. — Resolved that Mr Moore of Rangiora, bs informed that ho must discontinue the practice of slaughtering without a license. Road Repairs. — Resolved, that tenders be called for filling on the Puke-Paeroa Road, also for deepening drain a'boutls chains long. '1 ho cost not to exceed £15. Crs Quinn nnd Nash, moved that the road from Nash's to the Mackaytown Creek be metalled, and that £10 bo spent od the upper Hill track.
