EXPLANATION OF THE MYSTERY. Auckland, 14.
Ox Tuesday last a somewhat alarming telegram was leccivod from Kawakawa, Ray of Islands, respecting "a remarkable outbreak of volcanic: action" at Kitikiri, about ten miles fiom the township. It v, as stated that about a uoclc pieviously a small mound commenced to emit smoke and steam, although there was no sign of the foimuliou of a crater on the top or bides. Some ledhot stone* were also shot out, and when cold these smouldeied into a white a^-h. A still more alarming ieatuie was that " at night llamo and .spaikh. were dislinetly r-een," and, woim, still, the native^ brlio\ed "this inci[HcnL \oleano"' to b.* the j)rc-euv-or of an eruption .^imilai* to that at Tarawern. A subseijuent telegram fiom our eoue^pondent, who \i^ited the k> called \oleanie eruption, stated that theio w.'h only a small column ot smoke r^uing from a hole, and a few white a-he^ around the mouth.
