WRECK OF A STEAMER. THIRTY-ONE LIVES LOST.

Steam Xa\ icration Company's Swatow, accompanied by the loss of 31 lhes, 21 ot tho-o drowned being Chme-e. The disaster oecuned on the 22nd nil., on which date the vessel let L Swatow, on the China const, and stiuck en Hair Tide Keer at, 3 p.m.. the weathei at the time bein;4 overcast and claik. Theie was ,i corwdeiable .swell on, and Lt soon became e\ident that" the vessel must become a total wreck. The boats weie lowered, and that on the leeward side, in winch the ( aptain ombaiked, sa'ely reached Swatou : but ot the boat lowoied ()h the windward side, nothing moie has. been heard, it wa-, however, reported that the wreck of a boat had been *>een by .some fishermen, who picked up the bou> of the chief engineer (Mr Btuoe), and it i\ hence concluded that all who embarked with him weic di owned. The second officer was* &aid to have been in charge of the boat, which it is supposed musb have capsized or have struck u|)on another reef in the vicinity. An official inquiry was held at Swatow into the circumfetancefe, connected with the di.sa.ster, and Captain Warren's certificate was suspended for bix months. Mr Bruce, who was chief engineer of the vessel, has a brother and several other relatives resident in Victoria.
