John McKi.n/.ie Maci>o\ali>, prisoner in the Ten ace (Jaol,*who has ser\ed 17 year-.' penal bervitude, has been icleased fioni cu&tody on account ot enfeebled health through old age, and on the certiiicate of medical authorities. Over 17 years ago Macdonald set fire to a hotel in Vi anganui, and a lodger was burnt to death in the building. He received death sentence, but this was afterwards commuted to penal servitude for life. Several attempts have since been made to get remission of hi^ sentence, but without avail.
