MINING NEWS.

Grkvt activity is manifest, with respect to mining nutters thioiighout tlii-> poitinn of ihe gold II eld uonurally. Tin 1 confidence Mi" W. H. Wilson, has >lio\ui ill this district as a desirable Held for investment, by his purchase of the Battery Go's, mines and quartz reduction plant, and in addition tho Silver King claim, and the knowledge that oven before returnirg (o Austialia he ai ranged for many thousands of pounds to be expended in thoroughly prospecting and opening up in a systematic manner (he property puiehascd, lias infused new life generally into the d'Mrict; and pegging out is the order of the day. There is a \cry sanguine feeling abroad, not alone as regards the futuic of the Wariorongomai portion of the goldfleld, but aKo with respect to the Tui ; indeed there can be little doubt, the Tui will, and that probably at no distant date, become the scene of mining operations on a \ery large scale The vast reefs which abound in thispoi tion of thegoldficld, the value of which have been repeatedly demonstrated by n^ay, and test parcels despatched to Thames, San Francisco, and Emope, cannot fail to attract capitalists, and ihere can be no doubt the field is a most inviting one for investment Application has been made this week for no less than seven special claims as follows by .---Mr E. Canioion, "El Dorado," ?,i) acu-s, at Tui rejoining the Monte Christo Licensed Holding); Mr W. T. With." Bullion," .10 acres, Tui, (adjoins the Xl Dorado) ; Mr Ohas. Gallagher, " Bonanza," 50 acres, Te Aroha, (eastward of township, and includes Old Pro^peetois and Bonanza claims) ; JNJ r IL 71- Adams, " Thn Tower," '20 acres, Waiorongomai, (bounded by special claim-- known here to fore as births — and Ne\f Find) ; Messrs W. It. Wilson, J. McCosb Clmlc, J. C. Firth, and IF. JJ. Adams, "Almeda," 50 acres, Waiorongomai (adjoins Firths special claim) ; Messrs W. U. Wikon, and 11. U. Adams, " Grand Junction," 50 acres, Waiorongomai (adjoins I 'ay Dawn G. nnd S.l\r. Co.'s ground). This claim comes close up to Tui. Messrs John Goldsworthy and Henry H. Greenway, " Silver City," 50 acres, Waiorongomai; (adjoins Fergusson's special claim). It will be seen by the foregoing that Mr W. "R. Wilson, in addition to the area recently puioh.iserl, which («s stated in a

recent issue, when we gave particulars respecting the ground and the old claims it included) amounts to about 200 acres, Ims applied for additional land to the extent of 100 acres, and we may add this will include the line of the Buck roof, from the boundary of the special claim— known as Firth's — at the foot of the hill, right through portion of the Waiorongoniai township to the bank of the Waihou river. On Tuesday next the Warden will sit at To Aroha, when a plaint will be hoard lodged against tiie owners of the {Success mine, Waiorongoiua : , praying that the claim be forfeited, on the plea of non working, and awarded plaintiff.

SALE OK VALUABLE LICENSED HOLDINGS. On ilio same day (April 10th) the Warden will sell to the highest bidder 1 the right to occupy licensed holdings forfeited by the Mining Inspector, viz : Werahiko No. 2, five acres, late licensees Werahiko G.M. Co., and the live following which were included in what was known as the Waiorongomai G.M. Co. : Three Fools, nearly five acres ; Empire, about four acres and a half ; Golden Gate, about one and a quarter acres ; Virginia City, five acres; Provincial Amalgamated, about two and a half acres. A large amount of doad work ha?, been done in these claims, and quart/, of excellent quality obtained therefrom ; and there is every probability of keen competition ; at any rate the sale will afford a rare opportunity to capitalists who Avish to invest in mining property ; and as before stated the right of occupation will be knocked down to the highest bidder. Pioparations are in progress for the despatch at an early dat»» of -(0 tons of quart/, fiom Waiorongomai to the Adelaide Smelting Works, viz., 10 tons from Silver King, 20 tons New Find ordinary class of dirt, and 10 tons of the more silver bearing ore from New Find. At the Warden's Jourt, Thames, on j Thursilpy last, applications ns follows wore granted :- — L. Melho^e, Bonanza j licensed holding in two licenses of 5 acres oach, subject to the plan being ! amended ; Thos. McDouontjh, Maroloto Extended No 1 lieen^nl holding ; T. It is stated that a gentleman in Auckland lias purchased the claim owned by natives at Puriri for the sum of £1000, A deposit of £100 has already been paid to bind the bargain. Tn connection with the erection ol the new plant at, Waihi for the Union G. and S. M. Co , ooil hefitln.iy vviHi rlic J work' in hand is being made ; and fortunately the present fine weather will gioatly assist matters with respect to the large nniouul of caning machinery, etc. from J\icroa to the scuc of J operations, Ileitman and paity (ributers in the Woodstock mine, this week cleaned up and retorted the result of a crushing of 10(5 ton** for a return of I'M ounces.
