A Brave Rescue.

A Noble Retriever Saves a Man From a Watery Grave. On December 20th last the steamship !Muley If assail was passing through the Straits oi Gibi altar, when Captain. Thomson went on deck with his retries er Nellie. The sagacious animal at once ran to tho rail of the \espel, raised heibelf on her fore- paws and commenced to whine. The captain looked, but could .see nothing. The dog, however, got more and mote ie*jtless, and finally jumped oveiboaid and swam astern. The engines were h topped, and a boat lowered, when the dog was disco\ered firmly holding holding the collar of the coat of a drowning man who was Jying across two oars. It was afterward ascertained that he was the only sui \ ivoi from a Spanish levenue felucca, which had been upset in a squall, and that he had been i.i the water four hour's when re=cned. It would have been impossible for him to have survived much longer. Both tnan and dog were in a very exhausted condition when taken on boaid the Muley Hae«an. The above incident has formed the subject of a presentation to Captain Thompson of a silver medal and diploma, for his gallantry and heroism in saving the life of the poor Spaniard. Without in the least wishing to depreciate Captain Thompson's efforts or deserts, we must say that Nellie most certainly deserves to have some sorb of honour conferred upon her, and that she certainly ought to be ranked among the historical dogfl who have earned name and fame for herioc deeds.
