A series of contracts for repairs to the Paeroa- Waihi road were entered into by the County Council on Monday last, in view of the increased traffic on the road. The following were the successful tenderers. Contract No. (1 )--Carting and depositing metal from top of Quinns Hill to Nasli's, 30 yards. Edward Bain £3 15s; (2). Cai ting and depositing metal from McLoughrey's to top of Owharoa Hill, 50 yards, O'Donogliue, £10. (3). Carting and depositing metal Penncls to Rahu, GO yards, O'Donoghue, £10. (-4). Carting and depositing metal Uahu to Owharoa, 80 yards, E, Bain, £22. The Government have granted a subsidy of £133 6s Bd, or £2 for £1 for the remits and maintences of the hrid >es and culverts on the Waihi road. The timber will be up on Thursday by the Kotuku, and work will immediately be commenced- Besides these County road works Mr J. W. Walker is letting several contracts himself for road works ; Milligan and party have a contract at 15s 9d per chain, for forming a six-feet road at Waihi I The County chairman lias received a wire from Mr A. J. Cadman, M.H.8., in which that gentleman states that Government will shortly recall the proclamation giving the Thames Harbour Board jurisdiction over Ohinemui'i and Piako rivers. Mi' Lindsay Jackson, Engineer to the County Council has sent in his resignation. It is understood that a " working " foreman of works is to be appointed at a slight, increase on ordinary wages. Mr Argall, the Cornish mining expert, accompanied by Mr John McCombie, made an inspection of several of the Mavototo mines last week, under the auspices oF tlie southern mininsr syndicate., Vilio have already invested largely
in local mining properties. It is under* stood 1 the report k favourable, although its exact terms have not yet transpired. Tha Hon E. Mitchelson is expected here in a week or so, when- leveral deputations will interview him on various subjects. The County Council wilt press the matter of the purchase by Government of the Marototo goldfields fron the natives) and the desirability of the constitution of a local Warden's Court will al-so bo brought before the Minister. Local miners are very sore on this latter subject.
