RETIREMENT OF THE REGISTRAR Mr A. S. Allan, Rogihtiar of the Supreme Court here, will retire on pension next month. Jlo has served upwards of 40 years' continuous i-«r\ ice under the (lovernment, and has become entitled to retire on the largest pension which can under any circunisstances bo granted. This is twothuds of full salary. Mr Allan has received t ln ec months 1 leave of absence on full pay h'om the date of his retirement from actho duty. With the exception of Mr dustico Johnstone, Mr Allan is senior officer of the Supremo Court in the colony, and wa«s really an old settler before he entered tho (iovernment service.

RETRENCHMENT. The Government have informed Mr R. Macalister, Provincial District Auditor, that bis duties will in future be transferred to the Auditor-General's Department, and that consequently his services will not be required after the end of the present, month. Three months' leave of absence on full payis, however, granted him. Mr Macalister claims that the Government have no power to remove him, as his office is one tenable for life and provided for" from the Civil List. Some correspondence on the subject is proceeding. _______________
