WESTPORT HARBOUR BOARD MEMBERS REFUSE TO RESIGN.
Wellington', March £4. The Minister of Public Works has received a long letter from the Chairman of the Westport Harbour Board with regard to the request of the Government that members should resign at once, in order that a nominated body may be appointed. Tho Chair man writes that the Board has concluded that it cannot, without bringing odium upon itself, and doing' an act fraught with evil consequences to the tiaist, abandon tho right to local supervision of Westport Harbour works, which has been conferred by the Legislature, and supported by an endowment ns set foe fch in the Westport Harbour Act, 1884. It was expected that the new Harbour Boards— Westport and Greymoufch — would have been gazetted to-day, but as the Government desire to give the present Greymouth Board an opportunity' of resigning, which they have; so far, refused to do, the Gazette notifications will not appear until Tuesday.
