RE MINING.

In a lengthy communication sent to the Chamber of Commerce, Mr J. A. Connell makes some important recommendations with respect to mining ventures. He suggests that the Chamber of Commerce should appoint a special committee consisting of persons with experience in mining matters, and with power to employ experts for the the purpose of investigating all matters in connection with any mines that may be placed on the market; more especially mines that are to be floated in Australia or London. Experts are to examine the mines in question, and report to a committee as to their bema fides, in respect of which certificate can then bo given Mr G. As a result of a meeting of Thames members to day, the following telegram has been sent to Hon E. Mitcholson :-— " Large mains are now being landed from England to car 17 the water from the race to the big pump to facilitate the Drainage Board's operations. Will you kindly authorise pajmonfc of £2000 forthwith, so that the matter can be immediately taken in hand in accordance with the promise made by Sir R. Stout." Mr Jas. McLaren, Mining Inspector, has received notice that his services will be dispensed with after 31st inst. lie has been in the employ of thu Government for twenty years.
