The Future of the World.
It lias been the custom of late to disbelieve in tho ancient estimates of the population of China ; but the " North China Herald," a well-informed journal, publishes ytatisticswhich btrongly tJpport them. It appears that the authorities at Pekin have recently taken a census for taxing purposes, and the village baihifc, whose interest it is to understate the %ouos, return the population ab 319,383,500. Five provinces are omitted, jind their population, as recorded in the \af=,t census, brings the total up to 392,000,000. Even this figure is independent of the population of Thibet, Ka&hgar, | Hi, and Coica, and tho total number of souls ruled by the Emperor of China, theiefore, exceeds 400,000,000, and still displays a tendency to increase. As the *po] elation of India exceeds 250,000,00,0, the Indians and Chinese together constitute reovo than half the entire human race; a iact worth the attention ot those philosophers who study London and Paris, and then announce that " man believes' 1 this and that. There are many races of men, but some of the foremost amon£ thorn— c. 7., the French and the j Arabs— scai eely increase at all, while a few ; ~e.i1. , the Ottomans— slightly decline. If tho process now going on continues for another century, tho world will belong in the, main to four races, or rather peoples— the Teutons (most of whom , will speak English), the WUws, the Chinese, , and the native's of Ind,ia, . It.is quite possible, however, that they may quarrel, and. that tthoir march towards, ihe .niastery of, the, planet, which "else will belong to theni' like a cheese to mites, may bo seriously checked.
