NORTHERN TRUNK RAILWAY. OPPOSITION IN THE SOUTH.

DuiNEBiN, March 14, Strong opposition to the construction oi tho North Island Trunk Railway ia shown by the " Daily Times," which says: "We should think that there can hardly be two opinions amongst the South Island members as to tho desirability of uniting with Auckland members in opposing any attempt to continue the line along the Central route. It would bo monstrous at a time when fcho colony is pretending to draw in its horns to embark upon a work of this magnitude, which would, for its own puijoses alone, necessitate another million and a-hali loan, without counting tho consideration which would have to be given to other districts for that million and a-half. We find it difficult to undeistand how the Wellington members can have the conscience to make such a demand in the present condition of the country. With regard to the proposal to continue the liDe via Taranaki much will depend upon the result of the detailed survey now in progress. We should think it was highly probable that it will show the original estimate of this route to be nearly as incorrect as that of the Central route. In this position it is to be hoped that the Government will have the firmness to set their faces against tho continuation of the railway by any route. If the Notth Island Trunk Railway must be carried out, under present circumstances, it should be like the Otago Central, by private enterprise, which would px-obably settle the question of route in a far more practical and satisfactory way than Parliament could."
