NEWMARKET LICENSING ELECTION.
Auckland, March 14. The election of a Licensing Committee for the Borough of Newmarket, which took place yesterday, resulted in the return of a majority of candidates pledged to grant aa incvease of licenses in so far a3 the nowfamous Jubilee Hotel is concerned. Although the election was a remarkably keen one, them was no display of bad feeling, and the losing side took their beating very well. The result was announced by the ReturningOfficer (Major Pirie) at 6.45 to be as follows : — James Mason 69 William Edgerley 68 Robert R. Holmes 68 J. I.umpkin 66 Thomas Buddie 66 G. Bishop, 63 ; C. J. Ratjen, 59 ; F. G. Clayton, 56 ; G. Kenb, 55 ; James Thorpton, 50 ;J. McColl, 20. There were six informal votes. The first four of the elected Committee are increase-of-license men, and the fifth (Mr T. Buddie) is a temperance candidate. The result was greeted with loud cheering, and Mr Robert R. Holmes, one of the elected, returned thanks. Three cheers were given for Mr Suiter, and three groans for his opponents. Later in the evening Mr J. C. Seccombe enter • tamed several members of the licensing Committee, Mr Suiter, and the more prominent of his supporters at a little champagne spread at Host Buck's Hotel. Here tha healths of " The New Committee," " The Ratepayers of Newmarket/ " Mr Suitor," and "Mr Seccombe," were drank in bumpers oi champagne.
