ANOTHER ISLAND HURRICANE.
Auckland, March 12. Tin: s.s. Southern Cross which arrived yesterday from Fiji brings particulars of another disastrous hurrieanewhieh occurred at Tuviuni and its \icinity on the 10th ult. The hurricane while it la&ted was vciy severe, and did a considerable amount) of damage to pioperty, bub happily no lives were lost. The galo wa» telt the heaviest at Louui Loma, the principal native town of Tauuni. Keie over 53 natne houses weio destroyed, the cutterQuoenie belonging to the local Sugar Company was. swept on shore, and the sugar cane plantations levelled with the ground, while the bananas trees were swept clean. At Tuila an old wooden hou"»o \\as blown down, but the tea estate theie did not butler. Mate, the plantation of Mr Peckham, suffered very severely, much moio so than those of his neighbour. Thenoithcrn portion ot Tawuni also felt the full imy ot the hurricane, and consideiable damage was done in that quarter. At Kiimbuloa Point Air D. Elder's house and Mr Bulling, Loth native built, _ weie swe{-t away, and a nati\c village in the same vicinity was almost onthely destroyed. We learn that the inland of Rabi was also visited by tho&tonu, and a large Jiousoubed for stoiing iibre in was demolished. At Mago the sugar mill was untouched, but se\eral houte^ u-sed by the labourers weie lc\elled, and the sugar cane and other ciops sufiored severely. The mill was to btait erutshing operation** immediately after the btorm in older to savers much of the fallen cane at> pos&ibe, and thus minimipe the lost* caused by the storm. The hurricane was >o severe that the Southern Cross was during the time it lasted, sixteen hours, only ablo to steam niue miles. The schooner Easward Ho ! was -ible to get shelter in a bay at Loma Loma before the full force of the tempest was iolt, and thus escaped all damage The eflect of the hurricane will be to considerably delay the crushing tenson, which cannot now well commence before September, \\ hen it should have started i-i June.
