THE STATE OF IRELAND.
Dublin^ January 26. The secret inquiry clause of the Crimes Act appears. to be serving its purpose in Kerry. Recently, near the town of Castle Island, an^^tenipt was made to murder a young muf\ named Leane, who was fired at and wounded. His assailant, who had concealed himself behind a hedge, c tFected his escape. A man named Reidy was arrested on suspicion, but the police being unable to procure evidence of a sufficiently incriminating character, he was discharged. During . the past few days, Mr Home, resident magistrate, has been engaged in holding a sworn inquiry under the secret inquiry clause of the Crimes Act. No difficulty is experienced in obtaining evidence by this mean's in reference to a number of outrages perpetrated in the, locality within the past six months. As a first result of the inquiry the man Rejdy was yesterday re-arrested in connection with the attempt to murder Leane.
