Retrenchment.

Pickles Smith sighed heavily as he arose in the assembly-room of the Limekiln Club and introduced the following resolution :—: — " Resolved, Dafc we am libin' too fas' an' dab it am de opinyun of dis ulub dab retrenchment an' economy should become de standard mottoes of de kentry." Waydown Beebe opposed the resolution. He had lived all summer on potatoes, codfish, and bakers' bread, and if that was too fast living he didn't know himself. Whalebone Fowker said he must also oppose it. He had worn the same suit of clothes for four years, and it had been eighteen months since he had seen a mincepie on his table. Any further stretch of economy would leave him without stockings for the winter. Samuel Shin didn't want to seem captions, and as a rule he always voted in favour of every motion or resolution introduced, but in this case he must rebel. He waft four months behind in his rent, needed a hundred new things in his house, and was forced to make one paper collar last him a whole week. Several other members spoke in the same vein, and the President, placed the resolutiou on tho window-sill, with the remark :—: — '•If de kentry can't take keer of herself she must bust. If we had de money to fling on good clothes an' order quail on toast, I reckon dab all de mottoes eber hung up wouldn't stop us. De resolution will be laid aside and sold by de pound."—" Detroit Free Press."
