RE - ORGANISING THE CIVIL SERVICE. A TOUR OF INSPECTION.
Wir.uxoTON, March 9 A ni:w tour of inspection was begun in the Government Buildings yesterday, the inspectors beinj; the Premier, Under-Secre-t»ry Cooper, the Property Tax Commissioner (Mr Sporrey) and the Accountant, to tlio Treasury (Mr •). C. Gavin). The special object of this inspection is bait! to bo tlio le-classificution of oilicer.s in relation to tho comparativo importances of the duties, which they have to ])erform. Under this reclas«iiication salarie3 will bo made &o far as possible proportionate to tho importance of the soivices remunerated, so that, as many s'larino- inequalities at present exist in tin-* respect, these would bo adjusted. Thus, .-.ome officers will have their .salaries reduced, and others will receive slight increase. It was found that in soveral cases oilicerrf arc receiving the same rate of pay for services of widely ditleiinsf onorousness and value.
