Lieutenant Koss havinjr previously won tho belt in Auckland and Wansjanui, it now becomes his own ]->ro[)orty. Ua\ey chl i\o{ shoofc well, but Lumsden, Moore, and Proudfoot each made 38 : these three and Ko-^s having made the highest scores in tho t?n shots at 500 yards had to lire off toi the Carbine Challenge Cup, which Lieutenant Ross won.
In firing oIT the tie for third place, three shots wci c allowed. Lunisden and I'roudioot made 12, and Thorburu 11. There still being a Lie, Lunisden and l*roudfoot had to iiie bhot for shot. The former made ♦m inner and the latter a miss, so that Lumfldon gained third position. Besides tho bolt, Lieutenant Ross takc3 the X.Z.K.A. f^old star and JD3O ; Moore gets the N.Z.K.A. bilver star and £15; JLumsden, theX.Z.E.A. silver star and £10 ; Proudfoot, -C 5. THE RIFLE CHAMPIONSHIP. This ended, as was expected, in Purnoll, of YViinganui, winning the belt. Captain White, ex-champion, finished third, so that though defeated for the championship ho U by no mean* disgraced. Major Purnell's win was a very popular one, and he was c\iried shoulder-high out of the ground. Private .Johnson, though pressed to lodge <t protect, on the ground that Purnell was ineligible to shoot, very properly declined to do 80, aye.'ring that it he could not \\ In the championship by the score he made 1» • would decline to take advantage of a technical quibble. NORTH VERSUS SOUTH. TVI North v. Sorm Match, open to teams of 20 men selected from the highest a^re^ale scorerr- for the champion belt, the 20 highest in the North lalund to represent the Notlh, and the 20 highest in the South Ipland to represent the South. Distance, 500 yards, 7 shots.
