A Versatile Swindler.

A despatch from Boston to a Chicago paper says : Rev. William Hammond, who was arrested in Fulton, practised medicine in California in 1872 and 1873. One of hie several wives died there. Hammond was born near Montreal, and has an unsavoury record both in Canada and the United States. He baa " worked " maoy towns and small cities under the guise of minister or doctor. In 1886, while pastor of the Baptist Church at Franklin Fall*, he married • widow lady, secured some $3,000 or $4,000 'Which she -had, end 'decamped 'with a servant, firg& : administering/a, heavy dose of morphine to his wife, with the intention of killing her. She was found by neighbours in time to edve her life. Hammond was heard of in Montreal in connection with some swindling scheme, then in Indiana, Georgia, Illinois and elsewhere.
