When a friendly neighbour fetches Bones to pick from pome foul stew ; Curb your tongue and guard it closely, Lest he cany one from you. Unsought pci vices, when proffered By the si 1 anger, sua\e and kind, Can't be eciutinizt'd too clo«ely, He may have an axe to grind. Sleek philanthropists who labor Gratis for mankind each day ; Ever prompt -vsith pi avers to aid you, Always seem to make it pay. Shun with loathing man or woman, "Who, in little meanness skilled, Stands with coveit innuendoep, From a -\enorned tongue distilled. Watching each ungarded momcn f , At unwary piey to bound ; Every f-ense with malice quickened, Keen to make or break a wound. Would you be contented, think not Of the few by ,'ate more blessed; Gauge your lot by those less favored, Whom misfortune's hand hath pressed. For what ever way you travel, Climbing up life's wary hill, Pierced by thorns and torn by brambleß, There are paths more rugged still
